Winter is just around the corner and the cold climate does not bring rosy cheeks for everyone. 1. Apply Oil Based Moisturizer:

During winters, apply the moisturizer more often than on regular summer days. There are moisturizers for extremely dry skin available in the market to protect and pamper your skin from the harsh winter winds. Pick up oil basedmoisturizer as most of the regular lotions are water based. Oil based moisturizer will create a protective layer on the skin to save it from the climatic damages. However, don’t use the same moisturizer on your face and body. Applying a body lotion to your face will make you look too oily and will certainly cover the natural glow on the face. It may also clog the pores to result into skin break-outs. Find a non-clogging oil based moisturizer for your face such as; mineral oil, avocado oil, almond or primrose oil. Avoid moisturizers with Shea butter on the face and vegetable shortenings are absolutely NO-NO as they will sit on the skin and make your skin look very oily. You can also find a lotion, which contains humectants.

2. Apply Sunscreen:

If you thought, sunscreens are only for summers, change your mind. The sun in winter can be damaging; especially when combined with the snow glare. One of the most effective winter skin care tips for dry skin is to apply sunscreen to your face and other body parts; which are exposed to the sun, to avoid damage to the skin. Ideally, you must apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen approximately 30 minutes before venturing out. Re-apply the sunscreen on regular intervals to protect your dry skin getting drier during winters.

3. Avoid Face Masks, Peels or Alcohol Based Toner:

Face masks, peels or alcohol based toners and astringents can leave your dry skin uncomfortably parched. All these products can take off the natural oil from your skin. Use a mild toner or cleanser, without alcohol content and avoid clay masks.

4. Avoid Long Hot Water Bath:

Although, it is very comforting to take a bath in hot water after coming back from the cold winter outing; it may have an adverse effect on your skin. Hot water bath can strip off the oil on the surface of your skin, leaving your skin drier and flaky. Take short duration baths with lukewarm water. You can also add a few drops of oil into the water to create a smooth supple layer of oil on your skin. Oatmeal or baking soda bath is one of the most effective winter skin care tips for dry skin. Skip dry soaps and opt for glycerin or moisturizer based cleansers.

5. Switch to Humidifier:

Central heating systems may dry out the skin even further as they blow out hot air into your homes and offices. Humidifier gets more moisture in the air to prevent your skin from drying uncomfortably. Also, don’t sit too often, too close to the fireplace, it will leave your skin dry and damaged.
